How Quickly Things Can Change

  • Posted on June 2, 2011 at 8:33 am
This entry is part 22 of 24 in the series Quality of Life

Another example of why it is important to have regular workers.  They know the average, they can spot the subtle changes, such as just how wet she is, in the morning, or how much better a toe looks, or doesn’t look.

Like last night, everything was fine, but not this morning.

Mom is fighting a toe fungal infection, and it looked like we had finally under control, until this morning. Suddenly there is swelling around the little toe, and the redness is back.  It is also very painful, which means the wheeler, instead of the walker.

Saturday & Sunday are scheduled substitutes.  Oh this is not going to be fun, because the two scheduled, are okay, but not for when she is in pain. Specially the one scheduled for Sunday. Problem is, Beacon simply does NOT have enough qualified workers, to substitute.

AND NOW Mom, a lady of 94, will suffer because of it.  This is the NEW ORDER, established by the Conservatives. Oh you can call the Provincial Government Liberals, call them Socialists even, but it doesn’t alter the fact that they are nothing more than an imitation of the Harper Alliance Party.

Yes we do need to watch the money, but we need to get VALUE for the money we spend. BCS needs to update it’s employees, so that qualified workers are hired, not just cheap fill ins. The Government needs to MONITOR these employees, and NOT RELY ON BEACON to run a tight and effecient and competent ship.

Call them a Charity if you want, but the bottom line for them, and for VIHA, is PROFITS.

AND IT IS THE OLD AND INFIRMED THAT PAY THE PRICE FOR THAT, AT THE EXPENSE OF THEIR HEALTH, OF THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE.

Bad Batch of Cumadin?

  • Posted on June 29, 2010 at 9:43 am

Again, we had to have a blood test for Mom’s INR.  The levels were not good, and it seems Mom isn’t the only one experiencing such a fluctuation.  According to the lab worker, they have been doing a fair number of re-tests over the last month, though it seems to be settling down now.

Makes you wonder, as they are checking to see if there was a bad batch of Cumadin out there.  So, if that’s the case, it also shows that the Government is FAILING in its quality control of vital medicine.

Shouldn’t be surprised, look at the recall of Heparin not long ago, for contamination issues.

Business, it seems, is more about PROFITS than insuring its products are safe to use. And our Government is about PROTECTING THOSE BUSINESSES, not about KEEPING US SAFE.

Another Setback

It is very hard, to fathom how little things snowball, and become so major.

First it is the nagging for some new cream, to get rid of facial hairs for her, and then it becomes a fixation, but then my mind isn’t worrying about whether there is strand or two of facial hair, when the infection in the groin just won’t go away.

I don’t know if it was sitting in the depends all day, (despite numerous changes) or something else. Is it a reaction to the Lamisil cream or the infection mutating to something else? Hell, is it a yeast infection, or something that appears like one, but isn’t?

This is one reason why I don’t understand Physicians.  I know, odds are that the symptoms for the more common ailment is correct, but then again, WHAT IF it is also for something else?

Why do Doctors, and Nurses, seem to only look at the more common causes, and not consider the possibility it is something else?

Thing is, have been using the cream now for nearly 10 days. So surely a reaction would have shown up before this, wouldn’t it? Course I don’t know, but it now has sores, and blisters forming, and that worries me.  Not to mention, that it is extremely painful to the touch, or in just sitting.

DEPENDS are a great invention, and yet they create their own set of complications, for the elderly. I mean there is no ventilation really, so the heat is trapped inside, as is the moisture. Kind of makes me wonder, if it wouldn’t be better to do more laundry, than to use them, given the infection she has in the groin.

Still, these are helpful, but perhaps I have to look at some other method? Not even sure, but would Cloth Diapers be any better, and then of course, comes, how do I get her to use them without making her feel bad?

Now it is the waiting game, for the Doctor to decide what to do. And in the meantime, I have to keep calm, and not get her worried. And that is no easy task, because I wind up having to lie through my teeth, to not cause any alarm.

This kind of sucks, big time.

Keeping Track

  • Posted on December 6, 2009 at 10:48 am

The older one gets, I think it becomes more important on keeping track of details, of doctor visits, nurse visits, test results, but man, it takes a lot of preparation to do. Even if you are computer savvy, it is difficult to anticipate what you need to track, and then HOW.

I’ve used Excel, and yet, it is cumbersome in a lot of ways.

The problem is, what do you store, how often do you record it?

What to track

What to track

I wish there was an easy to follow template, but there isn’t, so guess I am going to have to actually spend some time, and think on this one. There are some good resources out there, one from a twitter I noticed, which I’ll have to go back and find.  That’s the downside to twitter, finding past tweets.

Things I know I need to include in my template

  • blood pressure readings
  • INR results
  • dates of Nurse visits
  • dates of Doctor visits
  • frequency of bowel movements
  • weight
  • innoculations
  • medications

Now the real problem is to record any outside details, such as things to watch for. A handy list of possible side effects would be good too, for easy checking, but then, that’s maybe going too far.  And yet, I don’t know, as a person ages, their reaction to things change. Side effects DO happen, and it’d be nice to know what they are, to double check.

Example, Dizziness.  Can be from a rapid drop in blood pressure, can be from the blood pressure medicine, or other meds.

This certainly is a lot more complicated than I thought. Time to read more on Excel, to see what it can do, so I can better track things, including how to make it simpler to do. Time is not an ally.

Google It Works

Lesson for the day, Dementia isn’t Alzheimer’s.

Okay, it is, and it isn’t. Googling Dementia got me to the official website for the Alzheimer Society of Canada, that has some pretty good information, that isn’t difficult to find. And that is despite the rather dated site layout, but hey, it works. (and that’s the web designer in me, talking)

Now for some reading, and learning, because I need to know.

There is a good page I’ve already found, that lets you download their brochures and stuff. They say they are in PDF, so that is a help. What I like is the ease at which it was to find this wealth of information.

This is the Resource Page to DOWNLOAD their Brochures.

Calcium & Vitamin D3

  • Posted on July 10, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Naturally, one needs to look at natural means, to try and aid the medicines, or conditions. Least if you truly want to be proactive in fighting diseases & such. So the official website, for osteoporosis, has a chart on the daily Calcium requirements. For someone my age, &  for Mom, it is 1500mg.

supplementsLike an idiot, I went out and bought some Jamieson Vitamins.  Calcium plus Vitamin D3.  I figured, well, it would be cheaper than two types, and be less intrusive too. I even asked the pharmacist about them, and he said they were fine.

WELL, Not Quite True.

Seems that when it comes to Calcium, there are a couple of kinds. Elemental and some other type, and while Elemental is considered the best, there is a small warning.  DON’T TAKE MORE THAN 500mg AT ONE TIME.

Now the reason given is that the body can only absorb that amount, at one time. The pills I bought give 635mg  per pill, of Calcium.  UH, HUH?

Kind of makes me wonder about both the Pharmacist, and the Drug Company. While the Pharmacist should know about these things, he can’t know it all. So him I’ll excuse, but the maker of the pills? I DON’T THINK SO.

Why give me more of something in a pill, that my body won’t absorb? Makes no sense, other than one of two reasons. Number one, it is to simply make me think I am getting more bang for my buck, so I’ll buy their product.

The Other reason, is that there really isn’t 635mg there, and is simply a bloated number.

Surely a company who is making these supplements, would know that you can only handle so much. Yet here they are, telling me that a larger dose is okay, and what is worse, suggest I take two of the pills each day.  Kind of like the Shampoo Industry, that says wash, rinse, repeat.  You don’t really need to wash it a second time, but it does help you use more, so you’ll need to buy more, sooner.

I really don’t mind them making money off this stuff. What infuriates me, is that they are pushing stuff that they shouldn’t. Excesses are not good, over the long term, and besides, if the body won’t absorb it, what good is it? It isn’t just about economics, cost, but about being responsible. Surely they should not be exceeding the maximum amount, and why isn’t the Government regulatory agencies making sure they aren’t over dosing people?

Most of these supplements, are important health aids. Yet it seems, there simply isn’t enough government oversight. Self Regulation is NOT a good policy, in my opinion. I don’t want to overdose Mom, and yet, if I didn’t research things a little, that is exactly what I’d be doing.
