Feels Like Friday Already

  • Posted on August 15, 2011 at 8:25 am

Not even 9:30am and already I am ready to go to bed.

From the smell of urine, to doggy poop, to everything including a whining wife, it’s a morning from Hell. Worse is, Mom is feeling the heat, though it really isn’t what you’d call a hot day. Sure the temps are up, but not like they are even in the 80’s.

She is moving slower these days, as the groin infection continues to wear at her.  It is hard to know anymore, what is hurting, if anything, or if it is a perceived pain. Her faculties are a bit disjointed the last few days, or perhaps even longer.

Her focus is fine, memory of times past is still amazing at times, and yet, there are moments when it is like she doesn’t even know where she is at.

Ah Monday, just another day coping with it all.

Is It Caution or Lack of Focus?

Lately, Mom seems to shuffle more and more.  By that I mean that instead of taking strides, when walking, she shuffles along, barely moving her feet forward.

In some respect, it is good. I mean this way she is moving slow enough, to perhaps feel any bumps or at worst, not lose her balance.  And that would help reduce the risk of falls, or would it?

Could the slow shuffling be a sign of her losing her focus on walking?

Worse is that it is truly exasperating. To follow behind, at a pace that makes a snail seem like a NASCAR racer.  I wonder too, if it is a result of fear? The fear of falling, breaking something else, that has her moving so timidly? Yet when asked, she says she is not shuffling, but if you watch, you know it isn’t true.  Her toes barely move past the other foot, before she stops and moves the other foot, to the same minuscule degree.

Course, when she has the need to go to the bathroom, man can she motor down the hallway, for the most part. I wonder too, is it because someone is behind her? I notice she moves a little bit faster, when I am not behind.

So am I the cause of her tentativeness?

The other issue, is her footwear. She normally wears a runner type shoe, but lately is taking them off, and walking in her stocking feet. Well, okay ankle socks, but they aren’t ideal for shuffling. And that could lead to a mishap too, as they slide a bit.

Whoever said this care-giving was easy, needs a good whack on the side of the head.

Staring Into Space

  • Posted on July 6, 2009 at 10:58 am

Lately I notice that at times, Mom will be sitting and just staring off into space.

By itself, maybe it is nothing, and yet when one looks closely, it is a sort of blank stare, that frankly scares me. I mean, is her mind slowly going? I know they did a memory test, but the results have never been fully explained to me. The only thing mentioned was that isn’t as sharp as it should be, not what that might mean.

Is it a sign of just old age, or is it a sign of something worse?  And that truly worries me. I have heard so many stories of Altzheimer’s disease, that it is a constant worry. I know David’s grandmother has it, or so his family says. Mind you, they have never had her tested for it, so again, who knows.

Yet each time Mom stares out, she has this expression, this sort of puzzlement at times, other times a sort of bewilderment, that is unusual. It is almost as if she’s lost her train of thought, and is sturggling to find it, to figure out where she is, or what she is supposed to do.
