Home Support is for…

  • Posted on February 3, 2012 at 3:28 pm

I wonder at times, just who is Home Support services supposed to help?

If the Patient is lucky enough to have an in home caregiver, then I suppose Home Support serves a dual purpose.

It allows for a brief respite for that Caregiver, as well as for the Patient, in providing services like washing, cleaning, etc.

Thing is, what about those who have no regular caregiver, such as a Son or Daughter, who lives there?

Today’s Health Services are greatly stretched, but are we using what resources we have, efficiently?

The longer we have in home support from Beacon Community Services, the more I wonder if perhaps the Government has too quickly abdicated its responsibility, under the guise of saving money.

Can a private organization actually provide better service than a Government run agency?

What about accountability?

This is the problem today, not just in Home Support, Health Care, but in all aspects of our lives. We have suddenly gone from having a Government that provides services to the Citizens, to one that simply PAY FOR THOSE SERVICES.     Take the Food Industry.  CIFA has no teeth anymore, and as a result we have much more food recalls than when Government OVERSAW the entire Industry.

Is this also not what is happening to our Health Care System?

When was the last time that VIHA officials actually called on some of those patients, to check up on the care they have been receiving from Beacon Community Services?

I have never received a visit, in over 2½ years.  Consider that the taxpayer pays approximately $37 per hour of service.  In two years, Mom has received a minimum of 912 hours of service.  That equals about $33,744.00  in taxpayer money.   Doesn’t it just seem prudent, and proper to check up to insure that all that money was wisely spent?   And if you consider it, the Gross return on that money is 50% to Beacon, based on them only paying about $20 an hour for their employees.

So here is a private NON PROFIT company receiving about $15,000.00 for one old lady’s home support care over the last 2½ years.  Doesn’t it make sense to be checking up on that?

I don’t know, all these so called Conservatives, like Christie Clark, Stephen Harper, talk a good game about fiscal responsibility, and yet they seem unconcerned about the companies they have hired to provide services to us.  They are unconcerned about checking up on them, on insuring that these private firms are actually adhering to their contracts.

I don’t know, but to me that just seems the exact opposite of what a so called Fiscal Conservative should be doing.

The Process of Dying

  • Posted on January 21, 2012 at 10:03 am

Yesterday was one of those days.  You get frustrated because your life revolves around watching someone slowly dying and you know, there is nothing you can do about it.  You are helpless in preventing Death from achieving its goal, so when things that you can control, are thrown out of whack, you lash out.

The problem isn’t that people are uncaring, it is that Business is more concerned about the bottom line, than about the people that GIVE them that bottom line.  From the consumer who buys their products / services, to those who help sell the products or provide the services.

When those you answer to, are more concerned about money, than people, then why should they care?

They aren’t being paid to do that, and let’s be honest, we ALL have our own headaches to contend with.

Yet I still Believe that WE have the power to change that. I know the concept of One Person, One Vote, seems archaic today, but then, nearly half of us don’t bother to make that choice. WE STAY HOME.

AND THAT IS WHAT HAS LED TO THIS CORPORATE CONTROL OVER OUR VERY LIVES.

Beacon Community Services has some damn good people working for them, but they are being burned out, and it isn’t because the job is hard, or difficult.  It is because they CARE.   And when you care, it takes a huge emotional toll on you, more so when the people you work for, simply don’t care.

People like Trinity, Tracy, Yvette, Billie, THEY CARE but then we have others like Edna, Rose and many many more, who are there for the paycheque only.  They have closed themselves off, for whatever reason.   It comes from an operation that simply wants bodies to fill the gaps, unconcerned if they are qualified or not.

When you reach this stage of life, to have to be at home 24/7 watching the person who raised you, slowly dying, as age takes its toll, you realize that all the things she taught you, no longer hold sway.

When I grew up, you could rely on Government for many things.  IF a business was mistreating its workers, they would insure it stopped, or was corrected. When you went to buy groceries, you never had to worry about tainted foods, or expired foods, because Government insured that didn’t happen.

No, it wasn’t perfect, there were instances when things slipped through the cracks, but they were rare, not common place. Today FOOD & PRODUCT RECALLS are a daily occurrence. It isn’t that there are just more products, more food being consumed, it is that Government has abdicated its responsibility to the very people who they are supposed to be watching over.

Business is an Entity.   Government is elected by People, and is supposed to be responsible to US.

As you sit by, watching a person dying, bit by bit, you see how the erosion of Government Responsibility impacts you more than if you were in your 30′s or 40′s going about your daily life. You see how simple things like buying food becomes a chore, and you wonder, about all those old people, who have no one to subsidize their income, who must manage on what little they have. You see people take advantage of them by rushing in, rushing out, leaving them exhausted and stressed.

Something that just hastens the dying process.

What Is There To Be Thankful For

  • Posted on October 10, 2010 at 9:55 am

It is the Canadian Thanksgiving weekend, and ya know, I wonder.  Just what is there to be thankful for?

I have a cold/flu for the last 2 weeks, every bone in my body aches, but I still have to get up at 7am and can’t head down to unwind until 10:30pm.

Dinner still has to be done, and the battle to make sure a 93 year old eats enough, is constant.

You may be sick, but you still have to be vigilant, to make sure that a 93 yr old takes all of her pills, not just the one’s she thinks she should. (Thanks to the buttinsky of a home support worker).

A wife who shows up and then disappears for most of the night, because he just can’t cope with the old person syndrome.  You know, the smells, the peculiarities, that old people seem to develop.

So what is there to be thankful for?

A routine that only changes when the health issues worsen?

A certainty that nothing you do, is going to prevent the final solution, the death of someone you love deeply.

A constant battle with Home Support Agencies that send workers who are, at best, there for the $20 an hour wage, not about making a difference in the lives of the people they come to help.  A so called ‘non profit’ agency that is really about only making money. A government whose sole purpose is to line their pockets, not serve the people who elect them.

Really, what is there to be thankful for?

For Life

Yeah, life sucks, I feel like shit, but bottom line is, I have a wife, who in his own way cares, and surprises me with his affection at times.  A mother who may be 93, but who is still able to recognize me, and talk to me.

The ability to actually hold back the dark forces of greed, indifference, by being here for Mom, is something to be thankful for. It’s not easy, and yeah, when you are sick you still have to fight through it and do your job, because no one else will do it for you. And that does make you stronger, for when you are going to have to face your own demons, devils, called BEING ELDERLY.

Not much to be thankful for, or maybe a hell of a lot. I don’t know which it is, at times, but when it comes down to it, it is the life I have, and at least I am alive to experience it. I guess that too, is something to be thankful for.  The memories that can flood in, at just the right moment, that do, make this all worthwhile.

So Happy Thanksgiving, may it be one of many to come.

Elected RepresentativesStill waiting on the scheduling office for the BC Minister of Health to respond, but not holding my breath.  Somehow I don’t believe that they will, simply as I am not a contributor or some Corporate Big Shot.

On the other hand, Rob Fleming’s office finally got back to me, and I have a meeting with him set up for early July.  Barring a cancellation, which can happen.

I suppose they have to do things this way, as there are only so many hours in a day, and a ton of people wanting a piece of their time.  You’d think that there would be an easier way for our Elected Officials to keep in touch with the people.  Mind you that assumes that they want to keep in touch.

There once was a time when we had access, us common ordinary joe’s & jane’s. Now it is all so computerized, so many rules and steps, that it seems like they deliberately DON’T want to inter act with the Public.  Strange, because you know, it is OUR Government, or was.

Maybe I am out of step on this, like so many other things. Perhaps I am just living in the past, not moving ahead. Perhaps today it isn’t about US, THE PEOPLE, but is about the Corporate Entity.  After all, while they DON’T VOTE, they do seem to have better access, better AUTHORITY over those WE SUPPOSEDLY DO ELECT.

Flu Shot Decision

  • Posted on October 2, 2009 at 9:28 am

One has to wonder at those who make decisions, regarding Flu Shots. Just who do they owe their allegiance to? US or the DRUG COMPANIES?

Preliminary testing, shows that the seasonal flu shot, will INCREASE the risk of getting the H1N1 (Swine Flu) for those who take the shot.  KIND OF SEEMS A NO BRAINER IN DECIDING WHETHER TO TAKE IT OR NOT, DOESN’T IT?

AND YET, the seasonal flu shot is being hurriedly released, for giving to Seniors. After all, they are the MOST VULNERABLE of our society, next to small children. YET our Health Officials are urging Seniors to once more, take the lead.  IN SHORT WE ARE MAKING THEM GUINEA PIGS.

Nice to know, that when you get older, you can still be of value to society, by being a test rat for the drug companies, isn’t it?

In Typical fashion, our Federal Health Agency has NO OPINION on this, and has PASSED THE BUCK TO THE PROVINCIAL AGENCIES.

Home Workers are expected to be vaccinated, and if they don’t choose to have the shot, and get sick, well gee, they don’t get any sick pay. In other words, they are being coerced into getting the shot, that may not only put them at risk, but those they look after. Isn’t that nice of our Government, to insure that we spread illness to everyone possible?

I know, I am cynical, but really, what is happening today is becoming very dangerous. We are playing with people’s health, without giving them a choice, and that smacks of dictatorship, and why? So the DRUG COMPANIES can reap higher profits? So that our health system gets further burdened, with sick elderly and infant children, which means more jobs, more outsourcing, and oh yeah, more taxes.

Common Sense seems to have died these days. How can any Government, justify putting people at risk, especially the most vulnerable in society? How can they sleep at night, knowing that many COULD die, because of their willingness to bow to pressure, from special interest groups?

I won’t let Mom have a flu shot this year, nor does she want one, because while the informatin is sketchy, the risk just isn’t worth it. AND frankly, the trust factor  between myself, and big business, is at a low. I see it everyday, in how these giant corporation are doing everything possible, to maximize their profits, at the risk of our health. Look at Maple Leaf Foods, at CIFA, if you doubt that perception. Hell, look at all the recalls in food, now that Stephen Harper has gutted CIFA and given over to the Industry to watch over themselves.

THE FOX IS IN THE HENHOUSE, AND WE PUT HIM THERE.

blue ribbon panelsFrom one blue ribbon panel, to another, they all proclaim that our National Health Plan is good, but needs some care, to make it more efficient, more responsive to the needs of the people. They all agree that it is a better solution than a two tier system, which Gordon Campbell is moving towards, which Stephen Harper would love to see.  Both seem unaware of the blue ribbon panel reports, or they simply are disregarding it, in favor of the plans put forth by their corporate sponsors.

I have no personal association with any Health Care services, whether it be my profession, or vocation. I am not a Nurse, Doctor, or Technician. I am not affiliated with any political party, nor am I a member of any Union.

I am simply, a son who wants to make sure that his mother’s remaining days, weeks, months, or hopefully years, are as comfortable, pleasant, as possible. In short, I want her to get the care she is deserving of, for being 92 years old.

I think that it is time, that people woke up to the simple reality of life. THEY WILL SOON BE OLDER, IN NEED OF THE CARE OF ANOTHER, SUCH AS DOCTORS, NURSES, ORDERLIES, HOME SUPPORT WORKERS. We, as citizens, can no longer sit by and allow our destiny, our so called ” Golden Years ” to be dictated to, by Unions, Business, & Political Hacks.

In short.  THE SYSTEM.

Today, we seem to be under the impression, that Health Care has to be profitable. Now, I don’t know when that changed, or came into being, but frankly, I DON’T BUY IT.

I am not some die hard socialist who believes that the solution to every problem, rests with Government. HOWEVER, I do believe that Government does have a role to play. Unfortunately, it seems today that the role Government is playing, is to feed the private coffers of Big Business, Special Interest Groups, & Big Labour.

Individual people, are being forgotten, or ignored, in return to keep expenses down, to keep profits up, and to keep people earning more.

money on health careWe are so consumed by the need for money, for more profits, that we are forgetting the very principles for which our society has been founded on. People in the Health Industry (which is a term that infuriates me) have forgotten, that their role is to help people, not machines, not cattle.

Don’t get me wrong, there is absolutely nothing wrong in making money, but should it be in Health Care? Should we be so consumed by profits, that we ignore the needs of the people under our care? See, that is why I believe, that Government should be the lead in Health Care. Not because they are more efficient, or anything else, but that they DO NOT HAVE TO SHOW A PROFIT EVERY QUARTER!

I am all for getting value for my tax dollar, but I am also aware that certain areas of Government are not going to come in on budget. For example, Education is not run at a profit, now is it? Neither is Law Enforcement, so why do we expect Health Care to be?

Cost Effective is not synonymous with Profits.

As a user of our Health Care System, I can honestly say that it isn’t about any one thing, that makes it so costly. I can see that equipment is a huge expense, as is labour, but frankly, it is how the system that governs all that, makes for a costly program.  We are WASTING the most important asset we have, which is the PEOPLE WHO WORK IN THE SYSTEM.

We are so consumed with the cost, that we are forgetting what the system is for. It isn’t about keeping staff on their toes, isn’t about having fancy new equipent the instant they are invented. It certainly isn’t about making money to pay for new roads either.

The system in place today, is geared towards monitoring services provided, not in insuring that the appropriate services are given. It isn’t about the users of the health system, but, is about those working for the health system. It is also, about scoring brownie points with the electorate, rather than in running a truly efficient health care system.
