Assaulting Old People | Disposable People

  • Posted on January 1, 2012 at 10:38 am

It is a New Year today, and Beacon Community Services is starting the New Year off with a Bang.

First they alter the morning schedule, to make the regular worker arrive a half hour later.  Course they don’t bother to let us know, so Mom was sitting on the edge of her bed, in preparation for the Worker.  Course her balance isn’t good, so actually she was leaning backwards, in a rather uncomfortable position.

As well, her sheets were pushed back, but not far enough, so they rested on the wet towel that we have under her, and in putting the pillows behind her, well they got wet from last night’s urine too.

THIS WAS TO BE MY SLEEP IN DAY

Guess an hour extra will do, though not really.  Meantime Mom is a bit nervous, and in checking to see when Yvette was to arrive, hey, the afternoon worker has now been changed.

NO CALL – NO NOTICE  from Beacon Community Services.

I mean honestly, it is blastered all over our account, to call when there is a change, of any kind, of any time frame.

I GUESS THE PEOPLE ON DUTY SIMPLY CANNOT READ ENGLISH

So today will be one of added stress for me, for Mom.  New person in the afternoon, which means here I go again, having to stand guard because the quality of workers is Piss Poor.   Most seem unable to grasp the basic concept that their primary duty is to keep the PATIENT SAFE, while doing their assigned tasks.

Privacy while one sits on the commode seems a foreign concept to these people.

As does understanding what the words SHAKY & UNSTEADY mean.

Truth is, Beacon Community Services is about making MONEY and the people they make it off of, are simply a COMMODITY that is DISPOSABLE.

Kill off one, there are lots more to replace them with, at a fee of $37 or more per hour, paid for by YOU & ME!

And You Are Who

This entry is part 8 of 8 in the series Follow The Money

Perhaps a better title would be :  How To Avoid Repercussions for Sending Unqualified Workers.

On Friday, I got a phone call, telling me that Nerissa was replacing Yvette for Saturday. Quick check of the schedule showed yep, a Nerissa was coming.  Course in that phone call I was also informed that she would be showing up the coming Friday.

Now the worker showed up, and I assumed it was Nerissa, but hey, no badge was visible, and she never did introduce herself. Course, if she did not sure I’d be able to understand or comprehend the name, due to a language barrier.

Tonight, in checking the schedule, I find that Saturday’s worker was not Nerissa, but Rose.  Uh, excuse me?  Who in hell was, or is Rose?

It matters, because when one files a complaint with VIHA, you have to have the facts correct.  IF I claim that we had a Nerissa and VIHA contacts Beacon Community Services, they are going to say I am talking out of my hat, because they sent me a Rose, not a Nerissa.  CASE CLOSED AS I AM MADE TO LOOK LIKE AN IDIOT WHO CAN’T GET THE NAMES EVEN RIGHT.

There is another issue here.  You see, by constantly changing the worker and then updating the schedule, they create a sense of trepidation. Just because they phone one day, to say who is coming, doesn’t seem to mean that is who will show up.  It allows them to avoid being told  NO DO NOT SEND THAT PERSON.

Neat trick, but it is not going to work.  See, I AM NOT AFRAID TO SEND A WORKER HOME AND DO THE JOB MYSELF.

It is a sad state of affairs, that has to be the end result. I am not looking forward to Monday, because I expect an argument from the Beacon people, when I tell them don’t send me Nerissa or Rose. I am also going to insist that any future changes, be vetted through me, and if they aren’t willing to comply, they can send no one.  I am not going to have them get richer off the well being of my Mother.

She is 94, and ENTITLED to competent help.  Beacon Community Services has a hand full of good capable women working for them, but the majority are simply glorified housekeepers.  Yes, housekeepers, because 9 out of 10 times, they are more interested in whether to empty garbage, or put laundry in, or make up the bed, than in properly drying an old lady, or even in insuring that she is properly washed.

I will say that for the most part, we have gotten our regular workers, but that is more due to me bitching loud and hard, than out of doing the right thing.  Sure, once in awhile they have to send a substitute, and under the right conditions, that shouldn’t matter but we are talking about dealing with elderly people who have health issues.  They need COMPETENT help, not HOUSEKEEPERS.

WHOEVER was here Yesterday, was just that. She’d only been working at Beacon for a few years, but even then, that is not an excuse. I have been looking after Mother for 2 years and 4 months and I know how to do the job, better than 90% of the substitutes that have shown up here.  I didn’t take any course, I’ve learned it the hard way, by doing it.

Course the difference between them and me is that I GIVE A DAMN ABOUT MY MOTHER.  It is obvious to me, that these so called home support workers simply don’t give a shit about the people they are assigned to look after.  AND THAT IS A SHAME.

From cars, to computers, to phones, we are a disposable society. Everything produced today is not built to last beyond the warranty, and that has now become how our Health Care System works.   Only trouble is that there is no fixed warranty on people, but they are no longer a precious commodity for our society.

INSTEAD THE ELDERLY ARE JUST ONE MORE DISPOSABLE COMMODITY OF SOCIETY.

This is the real legacy of Isabel MacKenzie and Beacon Community Services, along with the Government of Gordon Campbell and Christy Clarke.    I wonder…

HOW DO THEY SLEEP AT NIGHT?

The Aftermath

  • Posted on May 3, 2011 at 1:44 pm

Sorry, no I am not talking about the aftermath of the Federal Election. That’s for my other blog.  I am talking about the aftermath of having a substitute, who simply didn’t read the care plan, before showing up.

I suppose my biggest beef, is in the quality of staff being hired by Beacon Community Services, in their training, and in their willingness to actually care for an older person, such as Mom, who is going ot be 94 this month.

To begin with, BCS needs to have qualified staff who can step in, when a regularly assigned worker is sidelined.  Ours was today, and one hopes she’ll be back tomorrow, but the issue is, that BCS needs to have specially trained workers, who can float, go from new client to new client.

It isn’t fair to the Worker to take them from a regular, then dump them into a new situation. Nor is it fair on the Patient.  What is worse though, is the lack of actual caring for the Patient.

I mean, NO you don’t take a naked 93 year old to the bedroom to change her, when she tells you to do it in the bathroom. Never mind that she is standing naked, door open, and staring out at the street.

NO you don’t make a 93 year old walk more than she needs to, or stand more than she should. Especially when you have been told that she has trouble walking, has trouble standing.

NO you don’t make a 93 year old stand unattended, when she is prone to tremors, shakes, that effect her ability to maintain her balance.

NO you don’t rush her along, simply because you want to get the hell out.

NO you don’t pull on the walker, when she isn’t supported, or aware you are doing that.

NO you don’t PUSH on the walker, to push the door open more.

NO you don’t leave her to brush her own teeth, without making sure she is stable

NO you don’t leave her standing, naked, while you go make the bed, and put some of the dirty linen in the laundry basket.

NO you don’t wash her by telekineses. You actually USE water, and SOAP.

Today’s substitute worker, took those NO’s and made them ALL YESES. Not what I’d call steller or even close to being caring. Yet she claims to have 7 years of experience in this. I don’t know, but I sure as hell hope her regular patients don’t get what I experienced today.

There appears to be a genuine lack of caring, in people today. I know, I get frustrated, get irritated even, with how things are, when dealing with mom. Yet, I strive to not take it out on her, or David. I don’t always succeed, but then I am here 24 hours a day, seven days a week, dealing with it.  These workers are here for FIFTY MINUTES.

How many will die, as a result of this uncaring attitude & corporate greed?

Enexpected Worker

IF a company has the time to change the schedule shown to their Patients, THEY OBVIOUSLY HAVE THE TIME TO CALL THE PATIENTS.

NOT BEACON COMMUNITY SERVICES THOUGH.

It is very obvious to me, that Beacon Community Services hasn’t a clue about how to manage its workers, its Patients, and that VIHA should NOT RENEW the contract for this incompetent agency.

IF a new worker comes to the home, they should be able to communicate in the language of the Patient, and they should also be prepared to show Identification UPON ENTRY.  Not wait to be asked TWICE.

A new worker, should be briefed, BY BEACON prior to arriving at the home, and if they are going to rely on the SO CALLED YELLOW BOOK, then that book should be UPDATED REGULARLY & NOT JUST WHEN YELLED AT TO DO SO!

While I do not buy into the BS that Beacon hands out, and while I firmly believe that this MONEY MAKING AGENCY needs to lose its contract, I also firmly believe that those managing VIHA need to be removed as well.

VIHA is the Government Arm responsible for the decisions on companies hired to provide care to US, THE TAXPAYERS & CITIZENS.

BE RATHER IMPORTANT THAT THEY INSURE WE ARE RECEIVING VALUE FOR OUR MONEY, AND THAT ISSUES ARE BEING BROUGHT FORWARD, ADDRESSED & CORRECTED.

VIHA DOES NOT DO THIS AT ALL!

It is March 28th, 2010 and the last call, visit from anyone from VIHA about Mother’s care, was on September 4th 2009.

Think about it. They have allowed these people to send strangers into my home, to care for my 92 year old mother, and not bothered to contact me ONCE IN OVER SIX MONTHS!

SO MUCH FOR PROTECTING THE SICK, THE ELDERLY, THE HELPLESS

And considering just how much money the head of VIHA makes, it is a travesty.

Yes, it is the fault of the current government, however the NDP seem as incompetent in dealing with this issue, as the current regime is. I have written to the Health Critic, back in September, and STILL HAVE NO RESPONSE FROM ADRIAN DIX.

SO MUCH FOR CAROL JAMES & HER GRANDSTANDING MOUTHING OFF ABOUT GIVING US BACK OUR PROVINCE.   IT IS NOTHING BUT POLITICAL RHETORIC, NO DIFFERENT THAN THE CLAIMS BY THE CAMPBELL GOVERNMENT.

It is a sad state of affairs, when our elderly are left to the whims of private agencies, whose only goal, is to make money.  And while they claim to be NON PROFIT, explain how a company that isn’t making money, suddenly able to BUY UP THEIR COMPETITION UNTIL THEY HAVE A NEAR MONOPOLY?
