The Moron Brigade Struck Again

  • Posted on September 29, 2011 at 8:25 am

The Time Colonist had a feature story yesterday, front page news actually, about how reading was in the hands of the children.  Obviously today’s ADULTS, least those who work at Beacon Community Services, aren’t capable of reading, otherwise they would have noted, that when they CHANGE OUR SCHEDULE, they are SUPPOSED TO CALL US!

Once again, they have altered the schedule, no notice, and like it wasn’t bad enough to pull that crap on Tuesday, now just a day later, and here we go again.

I don’t give a shit what the reason is, the reality is that I spend a horrific day yesterday because Mom’s routine has been shattered. Her nervousness manifests itself in tremors, in shakes, in downright nastiness even. She starts to think about things in her past, that aren’t pleasant, are painful to discuss and just think about.

And that is how yesterday went, all because of the combination of sending an incapable worker on Sunday, then compounding the disaster with  a substitute on Tuesday, without any notice.

HERE WE GO AGAIN!

Thank you very much Beacon Community Services.  Your drive to KILL MY MOTHER is working, you are slowly and painfully robbing her of her sanity, of her strength. You are tormenting her, by making her feel confused and uncertain.  Non Profit my ass,  how much of a kick back you getting from the funeral parlors?  Or have you not thought of that yet Ms. McKenzie?

VIHA, you are as usual, incapable of administering to the needs of the citizens of this province. Premier Christy Clark you should be turfed out of office come the next election, to join Tipsy Gordon at the local watering hole, where you can whine about how unfair it is of the people to not support your blatant disregard for our needs.

Home support, from Beacon Community Services is a total and complete JOKE!

Warning to those who are in their thirties, forties, fifties, don’t expect to rely on your Government for support in your old age. Put as much money as you can, starve yourself now, if need be, in order to insure that when your time comes to rely on home support, you can be like Ms. McKenzie and Premier Campbell, Christie Clarke, Stephen Harper, and PAY FOR IT ON YOUR OWN.

It Is the Aftermath That Will Kill

How do the people of Beacon Community Services sleep at night? For that matter how does the head honcho at VIHA sleep at night?

After all, they MUST know that their decisions literally impact thousands of people, and NOT in a good way. I constantly worry about how good of a care I am providing for my 94 year old Mother. I think I do okay, but still, I worry, and yet I see stupid decisions by VIHA and BCS ( Beacon Community Services ) that makes me wonder, if they even know what it means to PROVIDE HEALTH CARE TO THE ELDERLY.

Sunday’s worker was nice, bubbly, but totally useless when it came to bathing Mom and helping her get dressed.  The lack of caring to even read the care plan PRIOR to arriving, or to even ASK QUESTIONS BEFORE COMMENCING, shows that once again Beacon Community Services are hiring untrained, unqualified, uncaring personnel, to care for Seniors.

What Beacon and VIHA fail to get, is that this type of attitude creates unnecessary stress for the elder person, ( not to mention the primary caregiver ) that doesn’t just end when the worker leaves the home. IT LINGERS, and has serious implications, that can, over time, KILL THE SENIOR.

It takes Mom about 2 or 3 days to regain her composure, and that is assuming nothing else shows up to rock the boat.  In those 2 or 3 days, her system reacts to the stress, by increased tremors of the body, that CAN lead to a serious fall, and injury.  It plays games with her mind, and in Mom’s case, also leads to a serious of ( what the doctor calls ) mini strokes.

Eventually those mini strokes can develop into a full blown one, and that could most certainly KILL HER.

The aftermath also includes worry, fear, that preys on her fragile mind, that makes her fixate on things, that make her nervous, that impact my day too. I have to spend a lot more time cajoling, and reassuring her, than normal.

Some may say that is part of the job, part of the hazards of caring for one’s elderly parent, but the thing is, IT IS TOTALLY UNNECESSARY.

  1. IF VIHA DID ITS JOB, IT WOULD INSURE THAT ANY PRIVATE COMPANY SENDING WORKERS INTO THE HOME, WERE ALL 100% QUALIFIED.
  2. IF BEACON COMMUNITY SERVICES WERE ABOUT HOME CARE, THEY WOULD INSURE THAT THEIR WORKERS WERE FULLY TRAINED AND QUALIFIED BEFORE SENDING THEM OUT ON THE JOB.

The reality is, that VIHA is merely looking for a way to lessen its responsibilities to the people of this region, and to SAVE MONEY.   Beacon Community Services isn’t about home support, or care, but is about PROFITS ONLY.

The aftermath of a rotten worker, isn’t just added stress to me, or even to my Mother.  It is that over time, depending on how strong Mom’s character is, the aftermath of the policies of the Vancouver Island Health Authority, and of their partner and co-conspirator Beacon Community Services is

DEATH FOR THE ELDERLY

Guess that is how they plan to save money, kill them off, and wash their hands of it.

Today, without warning, once more Beacon Community Services pulled another of its famous SWITCHES.

A substitute was sent, without any notice.  Just as we enter the 2nd day of dealing with the aftermath from Sunday, we begin the process all over again today.  My day now becomes filled with having to be extra cautious, extra aware, in order to try and prevent any serious repercussions, of a sudden, unexpected change in Mom’s routine.

When a person can afford private care, these issues don’t really exist. If the assigned worker is sub standard, they are simply fired from the job.  A new agency can be hired, if the old one is not living up to its contract.

  • Neither the owner of Beacon Community Services, nor the upper echelon of VIHA have to worry on that score, They all can afford Private Health Care, as can our Premier and Health Minister.

And yet, VIHA continues to pour MILLIONS of dollars into Beacon Community Services, despite KNOWING that the care they supply to Vancouver Island Seniors is not just SUB STANDARD but borders on ELDER ABUSE.

We will have more MINI STROKES, that hopefully she’ll recover from, as she usually does. BUT, there is coming a time when she won’t, and that means a lower quality of life for a 94 year old lady, that has done nothing wrong, to deserve such misery.  AND that is the best we can hope for, because it could also mean she will die.

No one gives a shit, not the personnel at VIHA who implement these stupid contracts, and most certainly not the people at Beacon Community Services, who simply are looking towards that paycheck. They want the shiny new cars, the iPhones and Blackberry’s, so what if it means old people are hurt, are stressed out and driven into fear and worry 24/7.

Least they get their new shiny toys.

The Aftermath

  • Posted on May 3, 2011 at 1:44 pm

Sorry, no I am not talking about the aftermath of the Federal Election. That’s for my other blog.  I am talking about the aftermath of having a substitute, who simply didn’t read the care plan, before showing up.

I suppose my biggest beef, is in the quality of staff being hired by Beacon Community Services, in their training, and in their willingness to actually care for an older person, such as Mom, who is going ot be 94 this month.

To begin with, BCS needs to have qualified staff who can step in, when a regularly assigned worker is sidelined.  Ours was today, and one hopes she’ll be back tomorrow, but the issue is, that BCS needs to have specially trained workers, who can float, go from new client to new client.

It isn’t fair to the Worker to take them from a regular, then dump them into a new situation. Nor is it fair on the Patient.  What is worse though, is the lack of actual caring for the Patient.

I mean, NO you don’t take a naked 93 year old to the bedroom to change her, when she tells you to do it in the bathroom. Never mind that she is standing naked, door open, and staring out at the street.

NO you don’t make a 93 year old walk more than she needs to, or stand more than she should. Especially when you have been told that she has trouble walking, has trouble standing.

NO you don’t make a 93 year old stand unattended, when she is prone to tremors, shakes, that effect her ability to maintain her balance.

NO you don’t rush her along, simply because you want to get the hell out.

NO you don’t pull on the walker, when she isn’t supported, or aware you are doing that.

NO you don’t PUSH on the walker, to push the door open more.

NO you don’t leave her to brush her own teeth, without making sure she is stable

NO you don’t leave her standing, naked, while you go make the bed, and put some of the dirty linen in the laundry basket.

NO you don’t wash her by telekineses. You actually USE water, and SOAP.

Today’s substitute worker, took those NO’s and made them ALL YESES. Not what I’d call steller or even close to being caring. Yet she claims to have 7 years of experience in this. I don’t know, but I sure as hell hope her regular patients don’t get what I experienced today.

There appears to be a genuine lack of caring, in people today. I know, I get frustrated, get irritated even, with how things are, when dealing with mom. Yet, I strive to not take it out on her, or David. I don’t always succeed, but then I am here 24 hours a day, seven days a week, dealing with it.  These workers are here for FIFTY MINUTES.

How many will die, as a result of this uncaring attitude & corporate greed?

New Fees for Seniors

  • Posted on December 31, 2009 at 9:08 am

The good old Campbell Government announced it is going to raise the fees, charged to Seniors in Care Homes.  A nice little New Year’s gift for them, is an 8% rise in fees this coming year, 10% next year.   It is expected to generate an additional $54 Million to the Province.

Isn’t that nice, to know those who are elderly, nearing the end of their lives, will add so much more to the Provinces Coffers, to help pay off the over budget Olympics and other mismanaged projects of our Provincial Government?  I mean come on, we have to pay those underpaid executives a bit more, so they can continue to do good work for us, like the head of VIHA or BC Hydro.

The change — affecting 75 per cent of seniors living in care homes — will bring in an additional $54 million, the province says. The revenue is to be used to improve services for seniors. ( source – CBC News )

Whatever happened to caring for people?

There is no doubt that service and care for the elderly in this Province, Country, & World needs improving, but you know, it comes from WANTING TO, NOT FROM HOW MUCH MONEY WE SPEND.

There are some really good care facilities, but when we turn over care to Private Enterprise, profit or non profit, we still need to maintain quality control. AND that is where OUR GOVERNMENTS are failing us.  Today we no longer have oversight, of these private groups that manage our care, whether it is the facilities or in home. The Government fails to see, that sure it may indeed provide all medications, meals, etc. to those entrusted into its care, but it DOESN’T KNOW if those medications are being given, if they are being given properly, or if they are even the right medicines.

They do not know if the staff hired, is truly qualified, and only BELIEVE THEY ARE, because well gee, THE COMPANY SAYS THEY ARE.

Perhaps if the GOVERNMENT actually did checks, actually monitored often, the care facilities, and kept to a high standard, then perhaps a rise in fees would be tolerated, would be acceptable. Unfortunately, today we do not monitor, we do not regulate, and worse -

WE DO NOT CARE
