Assaulting Old People | Disposable People

  • Posted on January 1, 2012 at 10:38 am

It is a New Year today, and Beacon Community Services is starting the New Year off with a Bang.

First they alter the morning schedule, to make the regular worker arrive a half hour later.  Course they don’t bother to let us know, so Mom was sitting on the edge of her bed, in preparation for the Worker.  Course her balance isn’t good, so actually she was leaning backwards, in a rather uncomfortable position.

As well, her sheets were pushed back, but not far enough, so they rested on the wet towel that we have under her, and in putting the pillows behind her, well they got wet from last night’s urine too.

THIS WAS TO BE MY SLEEP IN DAY

Guess an hour extra will do, though not really.  Meantime Mom is a bit nervous, and in checking to see when Yvette was to arrive, hey, the afternoon worker has now been changed.

NO CALL – NO NOTICE  from Beacon Community Services.

I mean honestly, it is blastered all over our account, to call when there is a change, of any kind, of any time frame.

I GUESS THE PEOPLE ON DUTY SIMPLY CANNOT READ ENGLISH

So today will be one of added stress for me, for Mom.  New person in the afternoon, which means here I go again, having to stand guard because the quality of workers is Piss Poor.   Most seem unable to grasp the basic concept that their primary duty is to keep the PATIENT SAFE, while doing their assigned tasks.

Privacy while one sits on the commode seems a foreign concept to these people.

As does understanding what the words SHAKY & UNSTEADY mean.

Truth is, Beacon Community Services is about making MONEY and the people they make it off of, are simply a COMMODITY that is DISPOSABLE.

Kill off one, there are lots more to replace them with, at a fee of $37 or more per hour, paid for by YOU & ME!

How Quickly Things Can Change

This entry is part 22 of 24 in the series Quality of Life

Another example of why it is important to have regular workers.  They know the average, they can spot the subtle changes, such as just how wet she is, in the morning, or how much better a toe looks, or doesn’t look.

Like last night, everything was fine, but not this morning.

Mom is fighting a toe fungal infection, and it looked like we had finally under control, until this morning. Suddenly there is swelling around the little toe, and the redness is back.  It is also very painful, which means the wheeler, instead of the walker.

Saturday & Sunday are scheduled substitutes.  Oh this is not going to be fun, because the two scheduled, are okay, but not for when she is in pain. Specially the one scheduled for Sunday. Problem is, Beacon simply does NOT have enough qualified workers, to substitute.

AND NOW Mom, a lady of 94, will suffer because of it.  This is the NEW ORDER, established by the Conservatives. Oh you can call the Provincial Government Liberals, call them Socialists even, but it doesn’t alter the fact that they are nothing more than an imitation of the Harper Alliance Party.

Yes we do need to watch the money, but we need to get VALUE for the money we spend. BCS needs to update it’s employees, so that qualified workers are hired, not just cheap fill ins. The Government needs to MONITOR these employees, and NOT RELY ON BEACON to run a tight and effecient and competent ship.

Call them a Charity if you want, but the bottom line for them, and for VIHA, is PROFITS.

AND IT IS THE OLD AND INFIRMED THAT PAY THE PRICE FOR THAT, AT THE EXPENSE OF THEIR HEALTH, OF THEIR QUALITY OF LIFE.

This entry is part 4 of 8 in the series Follow The Money

Are We?

To be honest, I think we have moved away from the old time morals and values, where we held the needs of all people, to be important. We used to think that people shouldn’t go hungry, that they needed Medical treatment, irrespective of how much money they earned, had.

There was a time when we actually cared about our neighbours. Hell we knew who they were, we talked with them over the fence, or visited with them.  It isn’t quite that way anymore, least not as much as it once was.

Stephen Harper calls himself a Conservative. Gordon Campbell said he was Liberal Conservative, but those are just words.  Being a conservative, is about fiscal restraint, about protecting people, with a mix of Government & Private Business.  It is about Government protecting people, by insuring certain standards are maintained, kept, and even improved upon.

Things such as health care, as food safety. Those are the roles of Government, and yet Harper & Campbell do neither. They instead push for letting Business set the standards, and for us, to cough up the money for it.

Private Health Care, Private Pensions, are fine, IF you can afford it.  Yet we can’t.  The average person cannot afford the luxury of such things, when there is no protection, no enforcable standards.

I am a Conservative.

Odd I know, but I believe in Government doing its job, which is to provide safeguards, and to make sure all citizens have the same opportunities. I don’t believe in elitism, nor do I believe in Entitlement. I just know, in my heart, that we need to care for all people, and yes, especially those who don’t have wealthy families, or vast incomes. We need to show compassion, not just concern over the bottom line.  I want value for my money, which means I want trained professionals, not just anyone off the streets, to care for the elderly, for the disadvantaged.

And that is why I can never see myself supporting anyone like Stephen Harper & his brand of Conservatism.   It just isn’t right.

State of Nerves, of Confusion and Worry

  • Posted on November 21, 2010 at 9:29 am

Who Will It Be Today

That is the nightly & morning battle cry, not from me, but from a 93 year old lady, who is becoming frail.  Her strength is being zapped, by the constant state of worry, of stress. She doesn’t know who will arrive to help her, in the morning.

She worries that she places too much on me, so she would rather sit in soiled undergarments, than ask me to giver her a change.

No matter how much I tell her, she refuses to interrupt, to ask. I think partly it is because she knows her condition is going to get worse, so she’s saving up, for that.  She wants to spare me now, knowing that later she won’t be able to.

I have said it countless times, but this is what happens, when a company is about PROFITS, not about CARING.   While the head of BCS pulls down A QUARTER OF A MILLION DOLLARS PER YEAR, VIHA CHAIRMEN PULLS DOWN A HALF MILLION A YEAR, YET IT IS THE PEOPLE THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR, WHO PAY THE ULTIMATE PRICE.

BCS needs to have its contract revoked.

VIHA needs to begin to be accountable, and hold all who enter into our homes, accountable. They NEED to step up, and actively monitor the personnel being hired, being sent to care for our Seniors.

These are our Mothers, our Fathers, surely we aren’t going to abandon them, simply because it is inconvenient, or distasteful.   THEY ARE OLD, NOT DISPOSABLE.

Bad Batch of Cumadin?

  • Posted on June 29, 2010 at 9:43 am

Again, we had to have a blood test for Mom’s INR.  The levels were not good, and it seems Mom isn’t the only one experiencing such a fluctuation.  According to the lab worker, they have been doing a fair number of re-tests over the last month, though it seems to be settling down now.

Makes you wonder, as they are checking to see if there was a bad batch of Cumadin out there.  So, if that’s the case, it also shows that the Government is FAILING in its quality control of vital medicine.

Shouldn’t be surprised, look at the recall of Heparin not long ago, for contamination issues.

Business, it seems, is more about PROFITS than insuring its products are safe to use. And our Government is about PROTECTING THOSE BUSINESSES, not about KEEPING US SAFE.

Native Language

  • Posted on April 25, 2010 at 9:56 am

Once again Beacon Community Services has thrown a wringer into Sunday.

This time, not only did they change the schedule, and worker, but sent one who’s native language isn’t English.  Now, that doesn’t mean its bad, unless the person’s ability to communicate in English is so bad, no one can totally understand every word spoken.

Worker changes, substitutes is one thing, but if you don’t inform the Patient of time changes, of worker substitutes, you create unnecessary worry for the Patient, and wind up setting a bad tone for the day.  Beacon Community Services simply DOES NOT CARE ABOUT ITS PATIENTS, or they would phone.

For example, is her name Rose, Lou, Lee or something else?

When I can’t understand every word spoken, how will a 93 year old understand any of the words?

IF BEACON CAN CHANGE THE SCHEDULE ONLINE, THEY CAN PHONE ME!

Again, it really comes down to the caring. IF Beacon Community Services gave a damn about it’s patients, they would do something to insure continuity, and be in constant communication with their customers.  They would notify them of changes, when there is time, and it is obious, IF THEY HAVE TIME TO CHANGE A SCHEDULE ONLNE, THEY HAE TIME TO PHONE THE PATIENT.
