Non Profit My Ass

This entry is part 1 of 12 in the series Making A Difference

Beacon Community Services is reported to be a Non Profit organization, which would be nice, if it was true.   Sure, under today’s bullshit regulations, they can claim to be that, but how does a tiny outfit suddenly rise to become the dominant force in the Community Health for Vancouver Island, if there isn’t money being made?

Then too, what business can exist without making some profit?  How else can they expand, if they aren’t tuned to the bottom line and having a surplus left over after expenses?

outsourcingThere is an old adage, of   FOLLOW THE MONEY.

By doing that, one can usually find the culprits who are in charge, but it also helps figure out some other issues.  Such as why do Beacon Schedulers mess around with the schedules so much?

They claim it is due to illness, workers booking off sick, etc. but FOLLOW THE MONEY, and you can get a different perspective.

For example, if you have a small group of SENIOR workers, who are paid the maximum (or near it) on the wage scale, and they are UNION, your ability to fire them, replace them, is difficult.   HOWEVER if you mess with their schedules, making it hard for them to do their job, some might get fed up enough, to simply QUIT.

THINK ABOUT THAT.

IF you have Seniority, you can easily work anywhere, or are comfortable enough to just simply retire, why would you put up with the uncertainty of the job?  Why would you continue to be shunted all over the place, instead of maintaining a regular client base?  Then too, if you do decide leave, have a regular client base, you could go out on your own, freelance, so to speak.

By messing with your schedule, your clients are put off, making it harder to secure freelance work, should you decide to quit the corporate roller coaster. It isn’t like they (Beacon Community Services) are telling the clients the truth about why you suddenly didn’t show up.  IT would also explain the switches in times, the lack of notice to Patients, among other things.

Business is about making money. The less SENIOR STAFF it has to deal with, the more PROFITS it can make. That is simply economics.  Whether you are NON PROFIT or NOT, the more income you can generate, the more you can pocket.  It really is that simple, and we all know the excesses that so called NON PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS are known to excel at.

Seniority Over Seniors

Mom has a worker she really liked, who had an accident that made her take several weeks off, in order to recuperate. Now that she is back, she’s off to other people, and not even with a full schedule.  She has time available, in Mom’s time slot, but it seems that SENIORITY takes precedence over SENIOR CARE.

IF the goal is to provide CARE for the ELDERLY, shouldn’t their needs comes before anything else?

This is the problem with OUTSOURCING to Private Organizations and, to some extent, even Government Run Operations.

WE need to decide which is better, to insure SENIORITY FOR WORKERS [many of whom are incompetent or plain uncaring] or if it is more cost effective to provide workers that can relate to their Patients.

Mom does better with a worker she trusts [and I trust] than someone who just looks at it, as a paycheque.   UNFORTUNATELY the number who actually GIVE A DAMN are less and less, so when you find one, you don’t want to lose them.

YET BEACON SEEMS TO THINK ITS OKAY TO PUNISH SENIORS & WORKERS. [It isn't like the worker chose to get sick (have an accident) nor is it Mom's fault that some are just incapable of dealing with an elderly person]

I am fully aware that not every request can be agreed to. However, when the worker has the time available, the Patient requests them, then no other consideration should take precedence. The health, peace of mind, of the Patient should over ride ANY OTHER CONSIDERATION.

There is a more serious issue too. IF the worker is one trusted, one that a rapport has been built, the Patient will stress less. That translates into a better mind set, that promotes healing, promotes healthy attitudes & living. It makes their lives easier, which in turn reduces strain on mediction needs, on other physical needs.

IT HELPS KEEP THEM ALIVE & WELL.   IT GIVES THEM A PROPER QUALITY OF LIFE.
